Free Wedding Toasts
In this article, I’ll attempt to lean on my years of experience as a public speaker to give you some examples of free wedding toasts that you can adapt for yourself. Feel free to shamelessly borrow these and modify them to your own use, and they’ll suit your needs perfectly.
Let me start by presenting a general format for most all wedding toasts. It’s as simple as 1 – 2 – 3:
If you’re the bride or groom:
1) Thank the people who are there. Start with your parents and the parents of the opposite member of the pair.
For example: “You taught me everything I’ve ever known. I followed in your footsteps and lived by your example, and it has been the greatest honor I’ve ever had to become a man/woman. Thank you for your guidance, virtue and dignity.”
2) Thank the audience.
“To all my friends, family and everyone else who has made it this far to be here with us tonight, thank you for being there with us on this day.”
3) Offer a toast to everyone by lifting your glass and offering your best
“To everyone here. May you all find good health, good fortune and happiness.”
If you’re not the bride or groom
The format is basically the same as the above 1-2-3 sequence, so I’ll not outline it again, but rather give you some free wedding toasts you can use. Also, see my page on the general format of wedding speeches and toasts.
NOTE: If you’re the best man and looking for humor, that should only be attempted if you’re comfortable with presenting humor to a crowd.
Free Wedding Toasts sample (Lightly humorous):
“I’d like to thank Mr and Mrs. ____ for putting on this beautiful wedding. When Dave first asked me to be the best man, I was honored. When I thought about what I wanted to say about Dave, I remembered back when we were in high school. Dave wore the most hideous shirt. I remember him wearing this old damn flannel all the time. I remember thinking “this guy will never make it”.
In all honesty, Dave turned out to be a great athlete, the most honest and sincere friend I’ve ever known. It’s no wonder he’s able to attract such a beautiful wife as Laura. I’d like to make a toast to the love you two obviously have for each other, for the spirit in this room, and to a wonderful life together.”

“I’ve known Jim for way too long. We met when we were about 9. We’ve always been very close. We went to school together. I remember when he met Sarah. I’d get these emails telling me about this beautiful girl he’d been hanging out with and eventually dating. Sarah is a very special person, and she has a great heart. I know these two will be happy and will have a wonderful life together. Here’s a toast to Jim and Sarah. To your happy life together!”
Free Wedding Toasts example (simple)
“Here’s to Laura. May she get the chance to share everything with David…including chores.”
Free Wedding Toasts example (humorous)
“David, place your hand on Laura’s if you would. David, you can remember this day as the last time you had an upper hand! Let’s all toast to the happy couple.”
